There are a numbe of approaches for looking for internship opportunities in the CG industry. Decide on what area you want:
film/tv
games/interactive
fine arts
programming or technical
web design
working for a startup
Each of these areas has specific requirements with film/tv and games/interactive or any type of design position requiring a portfolio of artwork along with resume for submission. A good place to start is looking at the following website:
Animation World Network (awn.com)
Creative Heads (creativeheads.com)
Gamasutra (gamasutra.com)
Look at some of the Venture Capital Firms like: Sequoia Capital, Golden Gate Capital, Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Byers (kpcb.com). If you look under <Companies> for the kpcb site, you will see a list of new startup ventures which you can contact for opportunities. Believe me, they are starting new and exciting ventures, and THEY NEED THE HELP!
Also, make an appointment at the Career Services Office, to research the alumni database for some of these industries. Dartmouth possesses one of the greatest alumni networks in the world…. make use of it!
Dartmouth Alumni in Entertainment & Media (http://alum.dartmouthentertainment.org)
Use Linkedln. If you haven’t already, get an account. This is how we network. Search for companies that you are interested, then type that company name into Unkedln. It will list all the people that work for that company. Send an Inmail message to the person who has the job or is in the area you would like to work in. Be casual. Introduce yourself, tell them you would appreciate their advice, and tell them that you studying Computer Graphics, etc. at Dartmouth. DO NOT MAKE IT A COVER LETTER!!! These are casual hello’s to start networking and get informed! People enjoy sharing their experiences, however this is NETWORKING NOT A JOB INTERVIEW! Use this to introduce yourself and gain information. That is how stuff happens.
